Who Must Israel’s Messiah Be?

(All Scriptures from the Complete Jewish Bible, translated by David Stern—some parentheticals added)

TANAKH (HEBREW TESTAMENT) PROMISES B’RIT HADASHAH (NEW TESTAMENT) FULFILLMENT

Messiah must fulfill God’s promises to Israel and bring the truth to the Goyim (Gentiles)

YESHA’YAHU (ISAIAH) 42:66 “I, Adonai, called you righteously, I took hold of you by the hand, I shaped you and made you a covenant for the people, to be a light for the Goyim,
YESHA’YAHU (ISAIAH) 49:66 “…he has said, “It is not enough that you are merely my servant to raise up the tribes of Ya‘akov and restore the offspring of Isra’el. I will also make you a light to the nations, so my salvation can spread to the ends of the earth.”

LUKE 2:25-3225 There was in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) a man named Shim‘on (Simon). This man was a tsaddik (righteous man), he was devout, he waited eagerly for God to comfort Isra’el, and the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) was upon him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Ruach HaKodesh that he would not die before he had seen the Messiah of Adonai. 27 Prompted by the Spirit, he went into the Temple courts; and when the parents brought in the child Yeshua to do for him what the Torah required, 28 Shim‘on took him in his arms, made a b’rakhah (prayer of blessing) to God, and said, 29 “Now, Adonai, according to your word, your servant is at peace as you let him go; 30 for I have seen with my own eyes your yeshu‘ah (salvation), 31 which you prepared in the presence of all peoples — 32 a light that will bring revelation to the Goyim and glory to your people Isra’el.”

ACTS OF THE EMISSARIES OF YESHUA THE MESSIAH (ACTS) 26:2323 that the Messiah would die, and that he, as the first to rise from the dead, would proclaim light to both the People and the Goyim.”

Messiah must inaugurate a new everlasting covenant

YIRMIYAHU (JEREMIAH) 31-3330 (31) “Here, the days are coming,” says Adonai, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Isra’el and with the house of Y’hudah. 31 (32) It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers on the day I took them by their hand and brought them out of the land of Egypt; because they, for their part, violated my covenant, even though I, for my part, was a husband to them,” says Adonai. 32 (33) “For this is the covenant I will make with the house of Isra’el after those days,” says Adonai: “I will put my Torah within them and write it on their hearts; I will be their God, and they will be my people.

LUKE 22:15-2015 and he said to them, “I have really wanted so much to celebrate this Seder (Passover) with you before I die! 16 For I tell you, it is certain that I will not celebrate it again until it is given its full meaning in the Kingdom of God.” 17 Then, taking a cup of wine, he made the b’rakhah and said, “Take this and share it among yourselves. 18 For I tell you that from now on, I will not drink the ‘fruit of the vine’ until the Kingdom of God comes.” 19 Also, taking a piece of matzah (unleavened bread), he made the b’rakhah (blessing), broke it, gave it to them and said, “This is my body, which is being given for you; do this in memory of me.” 20 He did the same with the cup after the meal, saying, “This cup is the New Covenant, ratified by my blood, which is being poured out for you.

MATTITYAHU (MATTHEW) 26:27-2927 Also he took a cup of wine, made the b’rakhah, and gave it to them, saying, “All of you, drink from it! 28 For this is my blood, which ratifies the New Covenant, my blood shed on behalf of many, so that they may have their sins forgiven. 29 I tell you, I will not drink this ‘fruit of the vine’ again until the day I drink new wine with you in my Father’s Kingdom.”

Messiah must be a Prophet like Moses

D’VARIM (DEUTERONOMY) 18:17-1917 On that occasion Adonai said to me, ‘They are right in what they are saying. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their kinsmen. I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I order him. 19 Whoever doesn’t listen to my words, which he will speak in my name, will have to account for himself to me.

YOCHANAN (JOHN) 6:1414 When the people saw the miracle he had performed, they said, “This has to be ‘the prophet’ who is supposed to come into the world.”

THE ACTS OF THE EMISSASRIES OF YESHUA THE MESSIAH (ACTS) 3:20-2420 so that times of refreshing may come from the Lord’s presence; and he may send the Messiah appointed in advance for you, that is, Yeshua. 21 He has to remain in heaven until the time comes for restoring everything, as God said long ago, when he spoke through the holy prophets. 22 For Moshe himself said, ‘Adonai will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You are to listen to everything he tells you. 23 Everyone who fails to listen to that prophet will be removed from the people and destroyed.’[a] 24 Indeed, all the prophets announced these days, starting with Sh’mu’el and continuing through all who followed.

Messiah must be born of the tribe of Y’hudah (Judah)

B’SHEET (GENESIS) 49:8-108 “Y’hudah, your brothers will acknowledge you, your hand will be on the neck of your enemies, your father’s sons will bow down before you. 9 Y’hudah is a lion’s cub; my son, you stand over the prey. He crouches down and stretches like a lion; like a lioness, who dares to provoke him? 10 The scepter will not pass from Y’hudah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his legs, until he comes to whom [obedience] belongs; [a]and it is he whom the peoples will obey.

MATTITYAH (MATTHEW) 1:1-17 (1-16 provides genealogy from Abraham to Yeshua per temple records of that day17 Thus there were fourteen generations from Avraham to David, fourteen generations from David to the Babylonian Exile, and fourteen generations from the Babylonian Exile to the Messiah.

MESSIANIC JEWS (HEBREWS) 7:1414 for everyone knows that our Lord arose out of Y’hudah…

THE REVELATION OF YESHUA THE MESSIAH TO YOCHANAN (JOHN) 5:55 One of the elders said to me, “Don’t cry. Look, the Lion of the tribe of Y’hudah, the Root of David, has won the right to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

Messiah must come forth out of Beit-Lechem (Bethlehem)

MIKHAH (MICAH) 5:2(2) But you, Beit-Lechem near Efrat,.so small among the clans of Y’hudah, out of you will come forth to me the future ruler of Isra’el, whose origins are far in the past, back in ancient times

MATTITYAHU (MATTHEW) 2:1-61After Yeshua was born in Beit-Lechem in the land of Y’hudah during the time when Herod was king, Magi from the east came to Yerushalayim 2 and asked, “Where is the newborn King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.” 3 When King Herod heard of this he became very agitated, and so did everyone else in Yerushalayim. 4 He called together all the head cohanim and Torah-teachers of the people and asked them, “Where will the Messiah be born?” 5 “In Beit-Lechem of Y’hudah,” they replied, “because the prophet wrote, 6 ‘And you, Beit-Lechem in the land of Y’hudah, are by no means the least among the rulers of Y’hudah; for from you will come a Ruler who will shepherd my people Isra’el.’”

Messiah must be born to Israel in the lineage of King David

YESHA’YAHU (ISAIAH 9:6(a), 7(6a) For a child is born to us, a son is given to us; …dominion will rest on his shoulders, (7) in order to extend the dominion and perpetuate the peace of the throne and kingdom of David, to secure it and sustain it through justice and righteousness henceforth and forever. The zeal of AdonaiTzva’ot will accomplish this.

SH’MU’EL BET (2 SAMUEL) 7:12-13(TO DAVID) 12 When your days come to an end and you sleep with your ancestors, I will establish one of your descendants to succeed you, one of your own flesh and blood; and I will set up his rulership. 13 He will build a house for my name, and I will establish his royal throne forever.

YIRMIYAHU (JEREMIAH) 23:55 “The days are coming,” says Adonai when I will raise a righteous Branch for David. He will reign as king and succeed, he will do what is just and right in the land.

LUKE 2:1111 This very day, in the town of David, there was born for you a Deliverer who is the Messiah, the Lord.

MATTITYAHU (MATTHEW)1:1 1 This is the genealogy of Yeshua the Messiah, son of David, son of Avraham…

LUKE 1:32 32 He will be great, he will be called Son of Ha‘Elyon. Adonai, God, will give him the throne of his forefather David…

THE ACTS OF THE EMISSARIES OF YESHUA THE MESSIAH (ACTS) 13:22-2322 God removed him and raised up David as king for them, making his approval known with these words, ‘I found David Ben-Yishai to be a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want.’[a] 23 “In keeping with his promise, God has brought to Isra’el from this man’s descendants a deliverer, Yeshua.

Messiah will be born as Prince of Peace

YESHA’YAHU (ISAIAH) 9:6-7(6) For a child is born to us, a son is given to us; dominion will rest on his shoulders, and he will be given the name Pele-Yo‘etz El Gibbor Avi-‘Ad Sar-Shalom [Wonder of a Counselor, Mighty God, Father of Eternity, Prince of Peace], (7) in order to extend the dominion and perpetuate the peace of the throne and kingdom of David, to secure it and sustain it through justice and righteousness henceforth and forever. The zeal of AdonaiTzva’ot will accomplish this.

YOCHANAN (JOHN) 14:25-2725 “I have told you these things while I am still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit), whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything; that is, he will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 “What I am leaving with you is shalom — I am giving you my shalom (peace). I don’t give the way the world gives. Don’t let yourselves be upset or frightened.

ACTS OF THE EMISSARIES OF YESHUA THE MESSIAH (ACTS) 13:3636 “Here is the message that he sent to the sons of Isra’el announcing shalom through Yeshua the Messiah, who is Lord of everything.

Messiah must be persecuted by rulers in his day

TEHILLIM (PSALMS) 2:1-21Why are the nations in an uproar, the peoples grumbling in vain? 2 The earth’s kings are taking positions, leaders conspiring together, against Adonai and his anointed.

MATTITYAHU (MATTHEW) 12:1414 But the P’rushim (Pharisees) went out and began plotting how they might do away with Yeshua.

MATTITYAHU (MATTHEW) 26:4747 While Yeshua was still speaking, Y’hudah (one of the Twelve!) came, and with him a large crowd carrying swords and clubs, from the head cohanim (priests) and elders of the people.

LUKE 23:11-1211 Herod (the King) and his soldiers treated Yeshua with contempt and made fun of him. Then, dressing him in an elegant robe, they sent him back to Pilate (the Roman governor). 12 That day Herod and Pilate became friends with each other; previously they had been enemies.

Adonai proclaims the Messiah will be His Son

TEHILLIM (PSALMS) 2:6-76 “I myself have installed my king on Tziyon, my holy mountain.” 7 “I will proclaim the decree: Adonai said to me, ‘You are my son; today I became your father. “

MISHNEI (PROVERBS) 30:4 Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Who has cupped the wind in the palms of his hands? Who has wrapped up the waters in his cloak? Who established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name? Surely you know!

MATTITYAHU (MATTHEW) 3:17, 8:28-2917 and a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; I am well pleased with him.”28 When Yeshua arrived at the other side of the lake, in the Gadarenes’ territory, there came out of the burial caves two men controlled by demons, so violent that no one dared travel on that road. 29 They screamed, “What do you want with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”Also

Messiah must be the way of repentance for all nations

YESHA’YAHU (ISAIAH) 2:2-42 In the acharit-hayamim (perilous or end times) the mountain of Adonai’s house will be established as the most important mountain. It will be regarded more highly than the other hills, and all the Goyim (Gentiles) will stream there. 3 Many peoples will go and say, “Come, let’s go up to the mountain of Adonai, to the house of the God of Ya‘akov! He will teach us about his ways, and we will walk in his paths.” For out of Tziyon will go forth Torah, the word of Adonai from Yerushalayim. 4 He will judge between the nations and arbitrate for many peoples. Then they will hammer their swords into plow-blades and their spears into pruning-knives; nations will not raise swords at each other, and they will no longer learn war.

LUKE 24:4747 and in his name repentance leading to forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed to people from all nations, starting with Yerushalayim (Jerusalem).

Messiah will take our curse pronounced by the Torah upon Himself by being hung on a tree

D’VARIM (DEUTERONOMY) 21:22-2322 “If someone has committed a capital crime and is put to death, then hung on a tree, 23 his body is not to remain all night on the tree, but you must bury him the same day, because a person who has been hanged has been cursed by God — so that you will not defile your land, which Adonai your God is giving you to inherit.

GALATIANS 3:1313 The Messiah redeemed us from the curse pronounced in the Torah by becoming cursed on our behalf; for the Tanakh says, “Everyone who hangs from a stake comes under a curse.”[a]

Messiah must be the enthroned High Priest

Z’KAHRYAH 6:12-1312 and tell him, ‘Adonai-Tzva’ot says: “There is coming a man whose name is Tzemach [Sprout]. He will sprout up from his place and rebuild the temple of Adonai. 13 Yes, he will rebuild the temple of Adonai; and he will take up royal splendor, sitting and ruling from his throne. There will be a cohen before his throne; and they will accept each other’s advice in complete harmony.

MESSIANIC JEWS (HEBREWS) 10:11-2811 Now every cohen (priest) stands’ every day doing his service, offering over and over the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But this one, after he had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, sat down at the right hand of God, 13 from then on to wait until his enemies be made a footstool for his feet.[a] 14 For by a single offering he has brought to the goal for all time those who are being set apart for God and made holy. 15 And the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) too bears witness to us; for after saying, 16 “ ‘This is the covenant which I will make with them after those days,’ says Adonai (GOD): ‘I will put my Torah on their hearts, and write it on their minds” 17 he then adds,“ And their sins and their wickednesses, I will remember no more.’” 18 Now where there is forgiveness for these, an offering for sins is no longer needed. 19 So, brothers, we have confidence to use the way into the Holiest Place opened by the blood of Yeshua. 20 He inaugurated it for us as a new and living way through the parokhet (veil in the temple), by means of his flesh. 21 We also have a great cohen over God’s household. 22 Therefore, let us approach the Holiest Place with a sincere heart, in the full assurance that comes from trusting — with our hearts sprinkled clean from a bad conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.[d] 23 Let us continue holding fast to the hope we acknowledge, without wavering; for the One who made the promise is trustworthy. 24 And let us keep paying attention to one another, in order to spur each other on to love and good deeds, 25 not neglecting our own congregational meetings, as some have made a practice of doing, but, rather, encouraging each other. And let us do this all the more as you see the Day approaching. 26 For if we deliberately continue to sin after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but only the terrifying prospect of Judgment, of raging fire that will consume the enemies. 28 Someone who disregards the Torah of Moshe is put to death without mercy on the word of two or three witnesses.

MESSIANIC JEWS (HEBREWS) 8:1-2Here is the whole point of what we have been saying: we do have just such a cohen gadol as has been described. And he does sit at the right hand of HaG’dulah (the Power Above) in heaven.

Messiah must be pierced and wounded for transgressions

TEHILLIM (Psalms) 22:1617 (16) Dogs are all around me, a pack of villains closes in on me like a lion. They pierced my hands and feet.

Z’KHARYAH (ZECHARIAH) 12:1010 and I will pour out on the house of David and on those living in Yerushalayim a spirit of grace and prayer; and they will look to me, whom they pierced.

YESHA’YAHU (ISAIAH) 53: 4-54 In fact, it was our diseases he bore, our pains from which he suffered; yet we regarded him as punished, stricken and afflicted by God. 5 But he was wounded because of our crimes, crushed because of our sins; the disciplining that makes us whole fell on him, and by his bruises* we are healed.

MATTITYAHU (MATTHEW) 27:3535 After they had nailed him to the stake, they divided his clothes among them by throwing dice.

YOCHANAN (JOHN) 20:25-2925 When the other talmidim (disciples) told him, “We have seen the Lord,” he replied, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands, put my finger into the place where the nails were and put my hand into his side, I refuse to believe it.” 26 A week later his talmidim were once more in the room, and this time T’oma (Thomas) was with them. Although the doors were locked, Yeshua came, stood among them and said, “Shalom aleikhem! (Peace unto you)” 27 Then he said to T’oma, “Put your finger here, look at my hands, take your hand and put it into my side. Don’t be lacking in trust, but have trust!” 28 T’oma answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Yeshua said to him, “Have you trusted because you have seen me? How blessed are those who do not see, but trust anyway!”

Also YOCHANAN (JOHN)19:18, 34-37

Messiah must be the healer of Israel

YESHA’YAHU (ISAIAH) 29:1818 On that day the deaf will hear the words of a book, and out of gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind will see.

YESHA’YAHU (ISAIAH) 35:55 Then the eyes of the blind will be opened, and the ears of the deaf will be unstopped;

MATTITYAHU (MATTHEW) 11:55 the blind are seeing again, the lame are walking, people with tzara’at (leprosy) are being cleansed, the deaf are hearing,[a] the dead are being raised,[b] the Good News is being told to the poor.

YOCHANAN (JOHN) 9:3939 Yeshua said, “It is to judge that I came into this world, so that those who do not see might see, and those who do see might become blind.”

MARK 7:3737 People were overcome with amazement. “Everything he does, he does well!” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak!”

Messiah must be numbered with sinners in order to bear our sins

YESHA’YAHU (ISAIAH) 53:1212Therefore I will assign him a share with the great, he will divide the spoil with the mighty, for having exposed himself to death and being counted among the sinners, while actually bearing the sin of many and interceding for the offenders.”

MATTITYAHU 27:3838 Then two robbers were placed on execution-stakes with him, one on the right and one on the left.

Also MARK 15:27, 28; LUKE 22:37, 23:32-33

Messiah must shine as light out of darkness

YESHA’YAHU 9:1-2(2) The people living in darkness have seen a great light; upon those living in the land that lies in the shadow of death, light has dawned. 2 (3) You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice in your presence as if rejoicing at harvest time, the way men rejoice when dividing up the spoil.

MATTITYAHU (MATTHEW) 4:13-1613 but he left Natzeret (Nazareth) and came to live in K’far-Nachum (Capernaum), a lake shore town near the boundary between Z’vulun (Zebulon) and Naftali. (Naphtali) 14 This happened in order to fulfill what Yesha‘yahu the prophet had said, 15 “Land of Z’vulun and land of Naftali, toward the lake, beyond the Yarden (Jordan), Galil-of-the-Goyim (Galilee)—16 the people living in darkness have seen a great light; upon those living in the region, in the shadow of death, light has dawned.”

Messiah will speak in parables and explain mysteries

TEHILLIM (PSALMS) 78:22 I will speak to you in parables and explain mysteries from days of old.

MATTITYAHU (MATTHEW) 13:10-16 10 Then the talmidim (disciples) came and asked Yeshua, “Why are you speaking to them in parables?” 11 He answered, “Because it has been given to you to know the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven, but it has not been given to them. 12 For anyone who has something will be given more, so that he will have plenty; but from anyone who has nothing, even what he does have will be taken away. 13 Here is why I speak to them in parables: they look without seeing and listen without hearing or understanding. 14 That is, in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Yesha‘yahu which says, ‘You will keep on hearing but never understand, and keep on seeing but never perceive, 15 because the heart of this people has become dull—with their ears they barely hear, and their eyes they have closed, so as not to see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and do t’shuvah (“return” or repent), so that I could heal them.’ 16 But you, how blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear!

LUKE 8:1010 and he said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the Kingdom of God; but the rest are taught in parables, so that they may look but not see, and listen but not understand.

Messiah will come as Israel’s shepherd

YESHA’YAHU (ISAIAH) 40:10-1110 Here comes Adonai Elohim with power, and his arm will rule for him. Look! His reward is with him, and his recompense is before him. 11 He is like a shepherd feeding his flock, gathering his lambs with his arm, carrying them against his chest, gently leading the mother sheep.”

YOCHANAN (JOHN) 10:1111 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

MESSIANIC JEWS (HEBREWS) 13:2020 The God of shalom (peace) brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep, our Lord Yeshua, by the blood of an eternal covenant.
